Wanshu Li interviewed by 2018 JOYA Barcelona

November 21, 2017

I fell in love with Wanshu Li jewelry from the first time a saw them! It was love at first sight! The day I saw the photo of her single piece-a brooch- JOYA posted on Facebook in the context of this year’s (2017) promotion of the selected artists, made me want to know more about this talented jeweler. I searched on the internet for her portfolio and I wrote her name on the top of the list with the artists I wanted to do a presentation of their works. So when it was announced that she was the winner of JOYA 2017 award, I wasn’t surprised at all! Because I knew it would be her!

Do you remember those Pin Art executive toys that were all the rage in the 80s? I confess I don’t really, or at least, not from their heyday. I discovered the odd curios that survived purges; the ones that languished forgotten amidst forests of photo frames.

The Dazzle jewellery showcase has been a regular in London for decades; SEEN can remember it at the National Theatre many years ago. Now they display truly remarkable collections by young, up-and-coming designers at the OXO tower, an entirely accessible space that catches the eye effortlessly as visitors and citizens alike walk along the glorious South Bank.

"Wanshu Li’s work stood out for us in terms of sensitivity of design concept and a sophisticated handling of materials. Her playful use of UV sensitive materials along with forms suggestive of underwater creatures produced a highly original, technically challenging and a creatively rich body of work. Her pieces are wonderfully tactile and sensuous to wear. She was awarded a distinction and will continue to stay on in the department as an artist in residence for the next academic year." / Susan Cross
